Functions of the Centre

A) The Centre Shall offer a multi disciplinary Teaching/Research leading to BS/MS/PhD Degrees under each division as per designated programme:

1.    Floristic Diversity Division: (Department of Forestry and Rangeland Management).

2.    Faunstic Diversity Division: (Department of Wildlife Management).

3.    Environmental Science Division: (Department Environmental Science).

B) Promote co-operation interdisciplinary relationship with other teaching and research establishments.

C) Arrange conferences, seminars, workshops and training / refresher courses in the fields of floral diversity, wildlife, environmental education and GIS Remote Sensing.

D) Strengthen human capacity in biodiversity conservation and management with specific objectives as follows:

I. Assess current capacity and the biodiversity-related training needs for natural resource managers, conservation professionals and other concerned staff, and the extent to which these are currently being fulfilled.

II.Design and implement in-service training courses to address immediate gaps and priority requirements.

III.Enhance existing training programmes in natural resource management, through the provision of funding, staff and equipment. Explore opportunities for ‘twinning arrangements’ with institutions in other countries – universities, botanical gardens, National park authorities and so on.

IV.Create various vocational diploma-level courses to train in protected area management, museum and herbarium techniques

V.Strengthen the capabilities of Non-Government Organizations and community institutions to play an effective role in the conservation and management of biodiversity; in particular, initiate training programmes with ‘umbrella NGOs’ that have large networks of community-based organizations and Volunteer Organizations.

VI. Integrate biodiversity concerns into the training curricula of rural development and extension staff, particularly in the fields of respective Division of the CBC.
