Biotechnology & Tissue Culture Division

This Section is working on the micropropagation of Date palm and other plants like Mango, Banana, Pineapple and Orchids through tissue culture. In addition, working continuously on sub-culturing of existing tissue cultured date palm varieties and adding number of new batch of varieties in the lab each year.  The continuous efforts of dedicated team made this section one of the best biotech & tissue culture lab in the country and among few labs working on Date palm inflorescence tissue culturing and got remarkable position worldwide on this field.

DPRI has succeeded to produce thousands of plants of several elite local and foreign varieties of date palm through tissue culture. More than 3000 date palm plantlets have been successfully acclimatized in Glass house and about 80 plants are shifted to field conditions in March 2013 to test their field and fruit characteristics, beside this their DNA fingerprinting test is also in process to check their true to type nature. These varieties include Dhakki and Gulistan from D.I Khan; Kurh, Kashoo wari, Dedhi and Gajar from Khairpur while world known varieties Barhi, Bertmoda and Zaghloul from Egypt.

Protocols for plant regeneration of mango through tissue culture technique have established. The Mango tissue culturing trial through seed/nucellus tissue is first ever in the country even very little work has been done worldwide.

Hundreds of tissue cultured plants of Orchids have been produced in the lab as well as shifted to Glass house for acclimatization.
