The 82nd meeting of the Advanced Studies and Research Board (ASRB) at Shah Abdul Latif University (SALU), Khairpur, concluded with landmark decisions reaffirming the institution's commitment to academic excellence and community-oriented research. The session, held at the university's Syndicate Hall, was chaired by Vice Chancellor Meritorious Professor Dr. Yousuf Khushk.
In a significant development, the board recommended the award of degrees to 35 postgraduate scholars, including 7 PhD candidates and 31 MS/M.Phil students. Additionally, the board greenlit a series of new research proposals across multiple faculties, demonstrating the university's vibrant research ecosystem. The meeting also adopted a comprehensive policy for the re-enrollment of dormant, discontinued, withdrawn, and time-barred students in graduate programs, ensuring inclusive academic pathways.
Addressing the board, Vice Chancellor Dr. Yousuf Khushk emphasized the critical importance of aligning research degrees with the Higher Education Commission (HEC) criteria and, more importantly, with practical societal needs. He stressed that academic research must transcend theoretical boundaries to deliver tangible benefits to both the nation and local communities.
"Research degrees should be related to winning research projects that can be useful for society and the country," stated Dr. Khushk. "Impact can only be achieved through project-based research. We should develop robust mechanisms for scrutiny and implement the entire process strictly in accordance with the university's prescribed policy framework."
Dr. Khushk urged faculty members to actively secure research funding from diverse organizations, including the HEC, and other national and international funding bodies. He underscored the necessity of fostering a culture where university research provides concrete solutions to community challenges, bridging the gap between academia and real-world applications.
The proceedings were efficiently conducted by Member Dr. Munir Ahmed Kazi and Mr. Islam Gul Mahar, Secretary for Postgraduate Studies. The meeting witnessed the participation of distinguished academicians, including Professor Dr. Maqsood Zia, Professor Dr. Wahid Bux Jatoi, Professor Dr. Noor Ahmed Shaikh, Professor Dr. Minhoon Khan Laghari, Professor Dr. Liaqat Ali Chandio, Professor Dr. Akhtiar Ali Ghumro, Professor Dr. Irum Rani, Dr. Muzfar Sirohi, and Dr. Sahib Oad.
Senior administrative officials, including Registrar Muhammad Hassan Halepoto, Controller of Examinations Nazir Ahmed Phulpoto, Assistant Director Zafar Ali, and Assistant Controller Imam Bux Janwari, were also present, underscoring the coordinated institutional effort toward academic excellence.
The board members unanimously lauded Vice Chancellor Dr. Yousuf Khushk's visionary leadership, acknowledging his instrumental role in elevating SALU to new academic heights. His relentless efforts to enhance educational quality and cultivate a robust research culture received widespread appreciation from the attendees.
