Experts Call for Policy Reforms, Media Engagement, and Indigenous Solutions to Combat Climate Change

World Environment Day 2026 was observed with enthusiasm and commitment at Shah Abdul Latif University (SALU), Khairpur Mirs, in collaboration with WWF-Pakistan. The event brought together environmental experts, academics, government officials, media representatives, and civil society members to discuss climate challenges and sustainable environmental solutions.
The program began with registration of participants, followed by an Environment Day Walk and a tree plantation drive. The formal proceedings opened with the recitation of the Holy Quran and the national anthem.
Meritorious Prof. Dr. Yousuf Khushk, Vice Chancellor of SALU, delivered the keynote address and termed environmental protection a collective responsibility for humanity. He stated that climate change, water scarcity, pollution, deforestation, and loss of biodiversity are major global threats that are also severely affecting Pakistan, particularly Sindh.
Dr. Khushk emphasized the need for practical measures, including large-scale tree plantation, water conservation, environmental education, promotion of renewable energy research, reduction of plastic pollution, and protection of forests and biodiversity. He also stressed the importance of involving youth and media in creating environmental awareness.
The Vice Chancellor remarked that environmental responsibility is not only a scientific and social obligation but also a moral duty. He urged universities, governments, communities, and civil society organizations to work together for a greener and healthier future.
Toheed Ghani Mahesar, Program Manager WWF-Pakistan, shared WWF’s initiatives for climate-smart and sustainable agriculture in the region. Punhal Khoso, Assistant Director SEPA, discussed environmental regulations and institutional responsibilities.
Earlier, Asif Ali Rajper, Senior Project Officer, delivered the welcome address and highlighted the importance of collective efforts and institutional collaboration in addressing environmental challenges and promoting sustainable development.
Representatives from various organizations also addressed the gathering. Shaukat from a Japanese NGO spoke on the importance of indigenous plant species in arid regions, while Shahnawaz Jiskani of WHO highlighted the ecological significance of the Seven Lakes of Thari Mirwah. Rajib Ali Laghari, Range Forest Officer, elaborated on the role of forests and biodiversity in maintaining ecological balance.
Prof. Dr. Mujeeb Rehman Abro, Chairman Department of Media and Communication Studies, emphasized the role of media in promoting environmental awareness and responsible public behavior regarding climate change.
The session concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Ali Raza Lashari, Assistant Professor at SALU.
The event reflected a collective commitment to strengthening environmental policies, promoting indigenous ecological practices, and encouraging sustainable development through academic and community partnerships.
Among others, Professor Dr. Inayatullah Bhatti, Dr. Sahib Oad, Raza Shahani, Waseem Kalhoro, Shahid Ali Lashari, and a large number of students attended the event.
