Shah Abdul Latif University (SALU) has inaugurated a comprehensive Faculty Development Program aimed at elevating academic and research standards to meet global benchmarks, with the support of the Sindh Higher Education Commission (SHEC).
The initiative was formally launched in a ceremony presided over by Vice Chancellor Meritorious Professor Dr. Yousuf Khushk, which also served as the opening session for a targeted five-day training event.
In his opening address, Dr. Yousuf Khushk declared faculty development the “backbone of academic excellence.” He outlined the program’s overarching goal to equip educators with modern teaching tools, research ethics, and innovative methods. “The skills gained here will directly benefit our students, strengthen research culture, and uplift the overall quality of higher education,” he stated.
Acknowledging the SHEC for providing a “valuable opportunity,” Dr. Khushk affirmed the university’s commitment to ensuring each training session contributes to “academic improvement, professional growth, and stronger institutional performance.”
He expressed deep gratitude to the Chief Minister of Sindh, Syed Murad Ali Shah; Chairman Sindh HEC, Dr. Tariq Rafi; and Secretary Moen ul din Siddiqi, for their unwavering support, vision, and commitment to strengthening higher education across the province.
He described the initiative as a “golden opportunity” for faculty to learn how to secure projects at national and international levels through enhanced proposal writing and by developing vital institutional linkages.
Dr. Altaf Samo of IBA Sukkur university who is the resource person of Sindh HEC for this training highlighted the significance of faculty training and appreciated the master trainers of Shah Abdul Latif University Khairpur for this cascading effort.
The intensive five-day Faculty Development Training (FDT), coordinated by Assistant Professor of English Mr. Muhammad Ibrahim Khokhar, is specifically designed for Early Career Lecturers and Assistant Professors. It brings together a panel of SHEC-qualified master trainers from SALU and partner institutions like IBA Sukkur University and the University of Larkano (TUoL).
The curriculum, detailed by Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Wahid Bux Jatoi and Prof. Dr. Altaf Hussain Samo, Director of the EDC at IBA Sukkur University and the event's Chief Guest focuses on comprehensive capacity building. Key thematic areas include:
· Pedagogical Advancement: Effective Teaching Practices, Communication Skills, Outcome-Based Education (OBE), and Assessment techniques.
· Research & Funding: Research Methodology, Supervision, and a significant focus on Proposal Writing for Grants to secure international funding.
· Quality & Inclusion: Quality Assurance, HEC Policy, Inclusive Education, and Student Counseling & Mentoring.
· Professional Development: Work Ethics & Professionalism, and Presentation Skills.
· Technology Integration: The effective use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) Tools and Gamification in academia.
Professor Dr. Akhtiar Ali Ghumro, in his vote of thanks, underscored the necessity of continuous learning in a dynamic academic world. “Universities are constantly changing and we have to update ourselves to cope with the changing world. The professor still needs training because knowledge is changing,” he remarked.
The ceremony saw participation from faculty members across SALU's Main Campus, Ghotki Campus, and Shahdadkot Campus.
Dr. Muzaffar Sirohi noted that this SHEC-initiated training is part of a series planned for various universities across Sindh.
The event was inaugurated with a collective resolve to leverage the training for tangible academic improvement, echoing Dr. Khushk’s vision of investing in educators to ultimately benefit students and strengthen Pakistan's higher education landscape. The five-day training will run through Friday, December 5, concluding with a certificate distribution ceremony.
