KHAIRPUR: Meritorious Professor Dr. Yousuf Khushk, Vice Chancellor, Shah Abdul Latif University (SALU), Khairpur, attended the funeral prayers of His Highness Mir Ali Murad Khan Talpur II, the last ruler of the former State of Khairpur and the “Mir of Khairpur,” and expressed profound grief and sorrow over his passing.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Yousuf Khushk said that His Highness Mir Ali Murad Khan Talpur II was a distinguished figure representing a historic era of Khairpur. His life remained connected with the period when Khairpur was a princely state and subsequently became part of Pakistan, joining the country’s new national journey. He said that on the occasion of his passing, it was equally important to remember the positive historical traditions of Khairpur associated with commitment to the nation, promotion of education, patronage of knowledge and literature, and public development.
He said that the accession of the State of Khairpur to Pakistan took place in October 1947 during the era of Mir Ali Murad Khan Talpur II. As he was a minor at the time, the affairs of the State were administered under a regency. Later, on September 16, 1951, Pakistan’s first Prime Minister, Nawabzada Liaquat Ali Khan, visited Khairpur and, at a formal ceremony, conferred full ruling powers upon the young Mir Ali Murad Khan Talpur on behalf of the Governor-General of Pakistan. This remains an important historical reference reflecting the relationship and mutual trust between Khairpur and the newly established State of Pakistan.
The Vice Chancellor said that one of the most significant aspects of the history of the former State of Khairpur was its patronage of education. Institutions such as Naz High School, along with hostels and residential facilities for students, reflected an approach in which education was not confined merely to establishing schools but also included facilitating access for students coming from distant areas. Mumtaz College and other educational institutions carried this tradition forward, and generations educated at these institutions later served Pakistan in various academic, administrative and social fields.
Dr. Yousuf Khushk said that Khairpur’s commitment to education was not confined to its geographical boundaries. The substantial financial contribution of Rs. 100,000 to the Aligarh educational movement reflected a broader intellectual vision that regarded education as a fundamental means for the advancement of society and the nation as a whole.
He said that Khairpur also had a strong tradition of honouring scholars, writers and intellectuals. The visits of eminent scholars such as Shams-ul-Ulama Mirza Qaleech Beg to Khairpur and his intellectual association with the region, the establishment of libraries, preservation of rare books and manuscripts, and the availability of advanced scholarly facilities of the time, including a micro-reader for their study, were different manifestations of this deep commitment to scholarship and research.
Dr. Yousuf Khushk said that the services of the former State were not limited to knowledge and education. The development of canal systems for agriculture and irrigation, improvements in communications and transportation, and the provision of public facilities played an important role in shaping the economic and social development of Khairpur. He emphasized that acknowledging these contributions within their historical context and recognizing their positive impact was a matter of fairness to history.
The Vice Chancellor said:
“Political and administrative systems may change their form with the passage of time, but the traditions of illuminating the light of education, honouring people of knowledge, working for public welfare and maintaining commitment to the nation live on for generations. Khairpur’s accession to Pakistan, its patronage of education, preservation of its intellectual and cultural heritage, and contribution to regional development are part of our shared history. It is our academic responsibility to transmit these positive traditions to the younger generation through research, balance and historical integrity.”
He said that Shah Abdul Latif University stands on this historic, intellectual and cultural soil and holds in high esteem the contributions of all those personalities, families and institutions that have played a role in advancing education, knowledge, literature, culture and collective development in Khairpur, Sindh and Pakistan.
In conclusion, Meritorious Professor Dr. Yousuf Khushk expressed heartfelt condolences over the passing of His Highness Mir Ali Murad Khan Talpur II and prayed that Almighty Allah may grant the departed soul eternal peace and an exalted place in His infinite mercy, elevate his ranks, and grant patience and strength to all members of the bereaved family. Ameen.
