Literary Conference, Sughar Kachehri and Mushaira Held at SALU Khairpur to Pay Tribute to Sayyidna Makhdoom Muhammad Ismail (RA)

A grand Literary Conference, Sughar Kachehri and Mushaira was held at the Students Society Center, Shah Abdul Latif University (SALU), Khairpur, to pay tribute to the revered Sufi saint Hazrat Sayyidna Makhdoom Muhammad Ismail Piryaloi (RA) on the occasion of his 274th Urs Mubarak.
The program was organized by the Shaheed Makhdoom Abdul Rehman Chair, Shah Abdul Latif University, Khairpur, in collaboration with the Makhdoom Abdul Rehman Shaheed Educational and Development Trust, Khuhra Sharif. Scholars, poets, researchers, students and devotees came together to reflect on the saint’s spiritual and intellectual legacy through scholarly discourse, folk wisdom and poetry.
Addressing the gathering, Meritorious Professor Dr. Yousuf Khushk, Vice Chancellor, offered a thought-provoking interpretation of the tradition of Urs. He observed that an Urs is not merely the remembrance of a great Sufi; it is society’s way of keeping wisdom alive across centuries. Before books and libraries, human knowledge travelled through memory and oral tradition; later, the written word became its custodian, and today technology has given humanity an extraordinary capacity to preserve and transmit knowledge. In this continuing journey, he said, Urs gatherings, Sughar Kachehris, Mushairas and literary conferences serve as living repositories of collective memory, reconnecting each new generation with the thought, values and humanism of those who came before it.
Professor Khushk stressed that the responsibility of a modern university is not simply to preserve the past, but to make the wisdom of the past speak to the future. He called for systematic research, digitization and translation of the manuscripts, writings and intellectual heritage of Sindh’s Sufi saints so that their message could transcend language, geography and generations. “Technology can preserve words, but it is scholarship that gives them meaning and human character that gives them life,” he observed. He also appreciated the researchers, scholars and poets who presented their research and creative work at the Literary Conference and Mushaira, describing their contributions as an important means of preserving, interpreting and carrying forward Sindh’s rich intellectual, literary and Sufi heritage.
Sajjada Nasheen Peer Makhdoom Nadeem Ahmed Hashmi, custodian of the shrine of Makhdoom Piryaloi Sharif, extended his heartfelt thanks to the Vice Chancellor and the University administration for their support. He appreciated the Vice Chancellor’s efforts in improving academic standards and suggested the establishment of a Persian Department to translate available literature into Sindhi, making it more accessible to a wider audience.
Professor Dr. Sajjad Raisi spoke about the role of Sufis in promoting equality in Sindh, highlighting how the region’s saints have historically championed social harmony and interfaith dialogue. Professor Dr. Taj Lashari, Director of the Makhdoom Chair, emphasized that followers should treat people with kindness and compassion, reflecting the Sufi tradition of service.
The literary conference featured research paper presentations and poetry recitations. M. Tarique Mahesar spoke on the occasion, while M. Ishaque presented a scholarly paper. Poet Hussain Bux Mahesar enriched the gathering with verses in praise of the saint.
Prominent attendees included members of the Adibi Sangat, former Additional Director Abdul Ghani Mahar (Culture Department), Hafiz Rafique Ahmed Soomro, Zulfiqar Sattari, Nazir Sindhi, Maosam Mahesar and Sami Mahesar. Hafiz Rafique Ahmed Soomro urged followers to be guided toward community support and service, while Abdul Ghani Mahar emphasized the importance of such conferences in preserving cultural heritage.
Also present were Professor Dr. Mujeeb ur Rehman Abro, Dr. Ali Raza Lashari, Professor Aijaz Shaikh, Dr. Sahib Oad and Waseem Kalhoro, among others.
The day’s proceedings opened with a poets’ gathering and Mushaira, followed by the unveiling of a commemorative publication (Souvenir) dedicated to Makhdoom Piryaloi. The ceremony concluded with the distribution of awards and certificates to students who participated in various competitions.
The event served as a meaningful platform to remember the spiritual and intellectual legacy of Hazrat Sayyidna Makhdoom Muhammad Ismail Piryaloi (RA) and to reinforce the values of knowledge, truth, compassion, peace and unity associated with his teachings.
