KHAIPUR, May 16, 2026 – Press Release
Shah Abdul Latif University (SALU), Khairpur, held a formal ceremony today to distribute Need-Cum-Merit Scholarships worth Rs. 9.1 million among 257 deserving students.
Out of 617 applicants applied for scholarships, students from nearly all university departments were selected strictly on merit. Each recipient received financial assistance to support their academic pursuits.
Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Yousuf Khushk, the chief guest, praised the Sindh government’s commitment to ensuring education for all despite financial constraints. Addressing the gathering, he said, “Today’s ceremony is not merely a cheque distribution event; it is a reflection of compassion, responsibility, and our collective commitment to education and humanity.”
Dr. Khushk emphasized that the distribution of Zakat, Ushr, and Need-Cum-Merit Scholarships embodies social justice in Islam and the constitutional responsibility of educational institutions toward deserving students. “At SALU, we firmly believe that no talented student should be deprived of education because of financial hardship. Education is not a privilege for a few; it is a right for every deserving mind.”
The Vice Chancellor announced that under the program, 100% scholarships are being awarded to deserving and talented students. “These scholarships are not charity; they are recognition of talent, determination, and the potential of our youth,” he said. He urged students to use the opportunity with dignity, adding, “Today you are receiving support; tomorrow you must become supporters of others.”
Dr. Khushk also appreciated the Student Financial Aid Office, specifically acknowledging the committee for their transparent and meritorious work. He noted that when he served as Pro-Vice Chancellor, funds did not lapse, and even now, under his leadership as VC, the amount has been effectively utilized.
He confirmed that students will be eligible for only one scholarship per academic year.
Saleem Tanwari, District Officer Khairpur (Zakat & Ushr), revealed that Rs. 7.4 million were transferred last year and Rs. 9.1 million
were successfully utilized this year under the current VC’s leadership. “There is a large number of deserving students at SALU. We have sent a demand to increase the budget from Rs. 1 crore to Rs. 2 crore, and we hope it will be approved,” he added. Appreciating Vice Chancellor Dr. Khushk, Tanwari said that funds lapsed and students were deprived before Dr. Khushk’s joining. Now, scholarship distribution is efficiently disbursed without any lapse, and the credit goes to the Vice Chancellor Dr Khushk.
Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, and convenor of committee Professor Dr. Liaquat Ali Chandio, said his team worked day and night to complete the selection process. “Under the leadership of the Vice Chancellor, we want to facilitate students. Since the last four days, we have worked tirelessly. Our committee has decided to pay the full year’s fees for selected students.”
Dr. Ali Raza Lashari, a committee member, proposed that students open bank accounts to have scholarship amounts deposited before June 30, 2026, to ensure timely disbursement. He also conducted the proceedings of the event.
The scholarship committee included Convenor Professor Dr. Liaquat Chandio, Professor Dr. Khalida Mahar, Dr. Ali Raza Lashari, Dr. Muzafar Sirohi, Secretary Karam Shah Bukhari, Masood Memon, and Mustafa Chandio.
