Unlocking Futures: SALU Embraces 'Each One Teach One' to Boost Pakistan's Literacy
In a significant move to combat illiteracy and bolster academic excellence, Shah Abdul Latif University (SALU), Khairpur, has pledged its full support to the Prime Minister's "Each One Teach One" (EOTO) initiative.
The commitment was formalized during a high-level meeting presided over by the Vice Chancellor, Meritorious Professor Dr. Yousuf Khushk, at the VC Secretariat today.
Mazharuddin Shaikh, Deputy Director of NCHD Khairpur, outlined the critical need for the initiative, declaring a national "education emergency" due to a literacy rate standing at 60.6%. The EOTO program is a cornerstone of the federal government's Roshan Pakistan, National Literacy Drive, calling on every literate citizen to teach at least one illiterate person.
The meeting, attended by deans of all faculties, focal persons and officials from the National Commission for Human Development (NCHD), served as a launchpad for the program's implementation within the university and its affiliated colleges.
"The program engages the entire community," Shaikh explained. "We incentivize participation by awarding 10 marks to students who teach, with graduates and postgraduates encouraged to teach two and three individuals, respectively. Certificates will also be awarded to the learners."
On the occasion, VC Dr. Yousuf Khushk announced a comprehensive plan to integrate the university into the national effort. "We want everyone to be literate," he stated. The university will participate in a one-day training workshop and mobilize a corps of 90 student volunteers, three from each of its 30 departments, to contribute to this societal mission. In addition, students from affiliated colleges will also be involved in this national cause.
