Shah Abdul Latif University (SALU), Khairpur, hosted a cheque distribution ceremony for the HEC Need-Based Scholarship for the fiscal years 2025 and 2026. The event marked a significant milestone in supporting deserving students who face financial hardships in pursuing higher education.
Cheques worth a total of Rs. 22 million were distributed among 325 students selected purely on merit. The university received over 1,200 applications, out of which 800 were shortlisted, and finally, 325 students were chosen by a duly constituted committee conissted on Prof Dr Mushtaq Ahmed Jakhrani Dean faculty of Natural Sciences , Eminent Scholar Author , Journalist Ghulam Abbas Bhanbharo, Social Activist and renowned person Mr Naveed Memon .
Presiding over the ceremony as Chief Guest, the Vice Chancellor, Meritorious Prof. Dr. Yousuf Khushk, addressed the students, faculty, and distinguished guests. He emphasized that the scholarship distribution was not merely a financial activity but a recognition of talent, dedication, and academic excellence.
“I strongly believe that no deserving student should be deprived of higher education because of financial hardship. At SALU, we are committed to supporting talented and hardworking students so they may continue their educational journey with confidence and dignity,” Dr. Khushk said.
The Vice Chancellor recalled the crisis he inherited upon assuming charge of the university, when even regular pay was difficult and scholarships were a distant dream. He shared that he immediately directed to release funds for scholarships, calling today’s ceremony “an acknowledgment of committee's hard work.”
Addressing the students directly, he said: “Treat this scholarship not only as financial assistance but also as a responsibility. Your education is linked with the dreams of your parents, the expectations of society, and the future of Pakistan.”
He further noted that parents often sacrifice their own wishes to ensure their children’s happiness and education. “The power of a nation is education,” he declared, adding that the students present today are future politicians, scientists, and leaders who will lead the country. He urged them to remember the committee’s merit-based role when they come into positions of power, as that would lead to a developed nation.
The Vice Chancellor congratulated the scholarship recipients and encouraged them to continue winning further scholarships.
Professor Dr. Mushtaque Ali Jakhrani, Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences, quoted the Vice Chancellor as saying that whatever amount is meant for students would not be given to anyone else, only to students. He appreciated the VC’s efforts for the welfare of students, teachers, and other stakeholders.
Dr. Jakhrani also acknowledged the contributions of Senior Journalist Ghulam Abbas Bhanbhro and social activist Naveed Ahmed Memon, along with other committee members, who took time to conduct interviews and allocate scholarships among eligible candidates. He confirmed that the merit list has been displayed and is available for anyone to verify.
He also issued an important reminder: students must deposit their cheques in their bank accounts before June 1, 2026, otherwise the scholarship amount would lapse.
Speaking on the occasion, Naveed Ahmed Memon called SALU a mother to its students. “It will nurture and educate you and make you capable of serving society and the country. Your future is the future of our country,” he said. He added that the committee tried its best to distribute cheques strictly on merit, and thanked the Vice Chancellor for reviving the distribution ceremony after several years.
Senior Journalist Ghulam Abbas Bhanbhro praised the Vice Chancellor for reviving the cheque distribution ceremony after a gap of several years, giving credit to Dr. Yousuf Khushk for the initiative. He explained that keeping in view the needs of families and students, the committee finalized the scholarships on merit after checking multiple factors. He described the Vice Chancellor as a great personality who will lead the university to the heights of success.
The ceremony was attended by Dean of the Faculty of Social Science Professor Dr. Liaquat Ali Chandio, Director Finance Kazi Nizamuddin, Registrar Muhammad Hassan Halepoto, Dr. Sahib Oad, Zohaib Shafqat Memon (Incharge/Focal Person, Students Financial Aid Office), Shafique Ahmed Mangi (Computer Operator), and other distinguished guests. Later, cheques were distributed among the selected students.
