KHAIRPUR: In a historic cultural milestone, a reformist stage drama rooted in Sindh’s traditional culture and civilization and based on the philosophy and universal message of the great Sufi poet Sachal Sarmast was presented for the first time at Shah Abdul Latif University, Khairpur.
The theatrical production took place at the university’s Adeeb Rizvi Hall and was organized by the M. Yahya Bhutto Yaadgar Committee in collaboration with the Department of Media and Communication Studies. The event was also supported by the National Academy of Performing Arts (NAPA), Karachi, under the Sindh Annot Rich Series 2025–26.
The drama was staged to commemorate the birth anniversary of the late renowned Sindhi actor and writer, M. Yahya Bhutto. The play, written by Hobdar Jageerani, was directed by Shah Hussain Shah, with Abdul Kareem Joyo, a student from the university’s media department, serving as co-director. The assistant directors were also students from the media department: Moheeb Ahmed Pathan, Aaqib Mohammed Abro, and Atteeq Ahmed Gillal.
Vice Chancellor of Shah Abdul Latif University, Meritorious Professor Dr. Yousuf Khushk, appreciated the contributions of Faheem Bhutto and his father, the late Yahya Bhutto, in promoting Sindhi culture through media. He remarked that the Bhutto family, despite lacking funding and relying on their own resources, has long championed Sindhi drama and culture.
Dr. Khushk also praised the drama’s artists, including renowned performer Nasreen Naz and others, for their powerful delivery. He noted that the drama’s message was wonderful, addressing vices such as ego and jealousy and showing how to eliminate these evils to live a better life and support society.
Addressing the students, the Vice Chancellor called them the future of Pakistan, urging them to lead the country. He also appreciated the role of the Political and the Army leadership, stating that Pakistan now stands as an ambassador of peace due to their leadership. “Because of them, we are leading the world toward peace and prosperity,” he said, expressing hope that the students would also play their role on the world stage.
Professor Dr. Mujeeb ur Rehman, Chairman of the Department of Media and Communication Studies, appreciated Faheem Bhutto for his efforts and noted that the collaboration between the committee and the department would result in practical work benefiting their students.
The play, based on the philosophy of the great Sufi poet Hazrat Sachal Sarmast, saw performers present Sachal Saeen’s thoughts in a traditional stage drama format, a tradition greatly appreciated by attendees. A large number of guests from various fields of knowledge, literature, art, and culture witnessed the performance, including Qurban Mangi, Bakhtiar, Dr Ibrahim Kharal, Akhtar Khokhar, Amar Iqbal, Taj Sarohi, Deedar Masoom, Faqeer Falyo, and Gul Mirani.
